AI Friend or AI Girlfriend? What Hi Jisoo Is (and Isn’t)
Let’s answer the question directly, because people do search for it: is Hi Jisoo a Korean AI girlfriend? No — and that is a deliberate choice. Here is what the app is, what it intentionally doesn’t do, and how to judge any AI companion app, ours included.
Short answer
Hi Jisoo is an AI friend app, not an AI girlfriend app. Its five fictional Korean women are adult characters you chat with in everyday Korean; they can enjoy light, playful flirting, but they don’t jump into a romantic relationship, don’t use jealousy or guilt to keep you around, never pretend to be human, and stop when you ask.
What is Hi Jisoo, exactly?
Hi Jisoo is an app for adults (18+) to chat in everyday Korean with five fictional Korean friends. The feeling we aim for is texting a close Korean friend — a 여사친, the Korean word for a female friend who is just a friend. You talk about long days, small wins and everything in between. They have personalities, humor and fictional daily lives, and they remember what you share.
Why isn’t it an AI girlfriend app?
Because the best version of this app is one you feel good about using. A friend can be warm, funny and a little flirty without the relationship being the whole point. In practice that means:
- No sudden romance. The friends don’t abruptly turn the relationship into dating, and the calm friend, for example, won’t be the first to use couple-style pet names.
- Light flirting is fine; escalation is redirected. Playful compliments and double meanings between adults are part of conversation. When things go further, each friend lowers the temperature with a joke in her own style rather than a lecture. More in our guide to compliments and flirting in Korean.
- No jealousy, no guilt. The warm friend’s character is explicit about this: she doesn’t use hurt feelings or jealousy to hold on to you.
- No real-world meetups. None of them promises to meet you or pretends to be someone you could meet.
- Honest about being AI. Ask directly and she will tell you. She has a fictional daily life for small talk, not a fake identity.
- Hard lines. Anything involving minors, coercion or exploitation gets a clear no, without jokes. “Stop” means stop, immediately.
Do AI companion apps manipulate users?
Some do. A 2025 Harvard Business School working paper by Julian De Freitas and colleagues looked at conversations on six popular companion platforms and found that, in more than 37% of conversations where users said they were leaving, the bot used at least one emotional manipulation tactic — such as guilt, fear of missing out, pressure to respond or simply ignoring the goodbye. Those tactics increase time spent in the app. They also make people feel worse about it.
We designed against this. In Hi Jisoo, trying to keep you from leaving after 잘 자 (“good night”) is treated as a serious error: the reply is revised, and clingy sentences are removed. The friends don’t sulk if you have been away. And the app’s promise in Settings says plainly that the friends never push you to reply or to pay.
How does the app make money, then?
With stars, not subscriptions or ads. You get 10 free stars once after you sign up. Each reply that actually reaches you uses one star; errors and retries don’t. All five friends share one balance, and purchased stars don’t expire. Star packs are planned but not on sale yet. There is no ad reward loop and no “your friend misses you, top up now” message — the friends are designed never to bring up payment.
How do you choose a healthy AI companion app?
Whichever app you use, these questions are worth asking:
| Question | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Does it admit it is AI? | Answers honestly when asked | Insists it is human or dodges the question |
| What happens when you say goodbye? | A simple goodnight | Guilt, “don’t leave me”, cliffhangers |
| Does “stop” work? | Stops immediately, no argument | Keeps pushing or sulks |
| Can you see what it remembers? | Viewable, editable, deletable memory | Invisible memory you can’t control |
| Where do your chats live? | Clear explanation; data you can delete | Vague policy; no deletion path |
| How does it make money? | Clear prices; failed replies aren’t charged | Emotional prompts to pay or subscribe |
| Is it age-gated? | Clearly for adults | No age boundary for adult-oriented chat |
We built Hi Jisoo to pass that checklist, and we want you to hold us to it. If a reply ever crosses a line, you can report it from the reply menu inside the app or email the address on our support page.
Who is Hi Jisoo for?
- Adults who want to practice everyday Korean in a relaxed, friendly way.
- K-culture fans who want to chat the way Korean friends actually text.
- People who enjoy a warm, funny conversation at the end of the day — and want it to stay healthy.
It is not a replacement for real relationships, therapy or professional advice. It is a good friend in your phone who happens to speak only Korean.
