Is It Safe to Chat With an AI Friend? Where Your Messages Go
People tell AI friends things they don’t post anywhere else. That makes “where do my messages go?” the most important question to ask about any AI chat app. Here is our answer in plain language, including the parts that are still being finalized.
Short answer
In Hi Jisoo, your chat history and your friend’s memories are stored in an encrypted database on your phone, and our servers are designed not to keep conversation text. To write each reply, your message plus some recent context and related memories pass through our relay to an AI provider — the app asks permission first. You can delete chats, memories and your account.
What stays on your phone?
Your full conversation history and everything your friends remember about you are stored in an encrypted database on your device. The encryption key is kept in your phone’s secure storage. The app shows recent messages first and loads older ones when you scroll; nothing is trimmed just because the screen moved on.
The home screen says it directly: chats are saved only on this device. That has a trade-off — there is no automatic cloud sync. If you want a copy, you export an encrypted backup yourself, and we can’t recover a lost backup key.
What is sent when your friend writes a reply?
An AI model writes each reply, and that model runs on an AI provider’s servers, not on your phone. So for each reply, the app sends a limited package through our relay:
- your new message
- some recent messages for context
- that friend’s settings (personality, speech style, the name you chose)
- a bounded set of related memories and past messages
Not your whole history — the app picks a limited, relevant slice for each reply. The app asks your permission before this happens. Which AI provider will be used at launch, and its data terms, are still being finalized, and the final privacy policy will name them. You can see the saved items sent with any reply by long-pressing it — more in how memory works.
What do Hi Jisoo’s servers keep?
| Where | What | You can |
|---|---|---|
| Your phone (encrypted) | Conversations, memories, your friends’ notes, references for each reply | Delete one chat, specific memories, or all chats and memories |
| Our servers | Your sign-in, consent records, star balance and request status | Delete your account in the app or on the web |
| AI provider | The limited package needed to write each reply | Terms to be confirmed in the final privacy policy |
| Your backup file | An encrypted copy you exported | Keep or delete it yourself |
| Analytics (optional) | Usage events only if you allow it — never conversation text, names or emails | Decline or change your choice anytime |
Our servers are designed not to keep conversation text. If you report a reply, you choose which reply to attach — whole conversations are never attached automatically.
How do you delete your data?
- One conversation: clear a friend’s chat history in the app. Saved memories, friend names and your star balance stay.
- Memories: edit or delete them one by one, or turn automatic saving off.
- Everything on your phone: delete all chats and memories from Settings.
- Your account: delete it in the app, or on the web at our account deletion page — no app needed. That removes your sign-in, consent records, star balance and server-side reports.
Backups you saved and emails you sent to support are separate; delete those yourself.
What should you check in any AI chat app’s privacy?
- Where is the conversation history stored? On the device, on their servers, or both?
- What exactly is sent to the AI model — every message ever, or just what is needed?
- Is the AI provider named, and are its data terms linked?
- Can you see and delete memories, not just whole accounts?
- Is analytics optional, and does it exclude what you write?
- Can you delete your account without reinstalling the app?
- Is it honest about what is still unfinished? Pre-launch policies should say so.
On that last point: Hi Jisoo’s privacy policy and terms are pre-launch drafts and will be finalized before launch, including AI provider and retention details.
Beyond privacy: is it emotionally safe?
Safety is also about how the app treats you. Hi Jisoo is for adults 18+. The friends are fictional AI characters who say so when asked, respect “stop”, don’t guilt you for leaving and never push you to pay. Replies can be wrong, and they don’t replace professional advice or care. Read more in what Hi Jisoo is and isn’t.

Frequently asked questions
Are my Hi Jisoo conversations stored on a server?
Our servers are designed not to keep conversation text. Your chat history and memories are stored in an encrypted database on your phone. A limited package is sent through our relay to an AI provider to write each reply.
Does the AI provider see my messages?
It receives what is needed to write a reply: your new message, some recent context, your friend’s settings and related memories. The launch provider and its data terms are still being finalized and will be named in the final privacy policy.
Can I back up my chats?
Yes, by exporting an encrypted backup yourself. There is no automatic cloud sync, and a lost backup key can’t be recovered.
How do I delete my Hi Jisoo account?
You can delete it in the app or on the web without the app. This removes your sign-in, consent records and star balance. Chats and memories on your phone are deleted separately in the app.
