AI Korean Tutor vs AI Korean Friend: Which Actually Gets You Talking?

Most Korean learning apps feel like class: a prompt, your answer, a red correction, the next prompt. That is useful — but it is not what talking to a Korean friend feels like, and it is not what makes conversation stick. We built Hi Jisoo on purpose as a friend, not a tutor. Here is what that difference means, and when a tutor is still the better choice.

Short answer

An AI Korean tutor is best for drills and corrections; an AI Korean friend is best for getting you to actually talk — every day, in natural Korean, about your own life. Hi Jisoo is built as a friend: the chat always stays in Korean, five friends each have their own personality, and the relationship develops over time.

Why don’t tutor-style apps make you better at conversation?

Tutor apps are designed around correctness. That shapes everything about the exchange:

  • The app leads, you follow. It asks, you answer. In real chats, you start topics, change topics and decide when to stop.
  • Every sentence is graded. Constant correction makes you write shorter, safer sentences — the opposite of what builds fluency.
  • One neutral voice. A tutor sounds the same whoever you are. Real Korean changes with the relationship: polite with some people, casual with others, playful with a few.
  • No shared history. Each lesson starts fresh. Friends remember the exam you mentioned on Monday.
  • English creeps in. When you struggle, many apps explain in English — and you practice reading explanations instead of talking.

None of this is wrong for a tutor. It is just a different job. Conversation fluency comes from hundreds of low-stakes exchanges about your own life, where the goal is to keep talking, not to be marked.

What does Hi Jisoo do differently?

Hi Jisoo is an app for adults (18+) to chat in everyday Korean with five fictional Korean friends. The design choices all follow from one idea: practice should feel like texting a close Korean friend.

  • The chat always stays in Korean. The app’s screens come in English, Korean, Japanese and both forms of Chinese, but the conversation itself is Korean. It is not a translator.
  • Easy Korean, not baby Korean. Turn on Easy Korean for a friend and she is asked to use simpler expressions — while still sounding like herself.
  • Five ways of talking. A calm friend in short polite sentences, a playful one who teases in friendly polite speech, a candid one in plain casual speech, a practical one who turns feelings into small plans, and a warm one who notices details. You hear how the same situation sounds in different relationships.
  • The relationship moves. After you have talked for a while, a friend who started politely may ask whether to speak casually — the Korean moment of 말 놓기. Say yes and she switches; say no and she won’t keep asking. See banmal vs jondaemal.
  • She remembers your life. Mention an interview and, a few days later, she may ask how it went — once, not on repeat. You can see, edit or delete what she remembers (how memory works).
  • She doesn’t grade you. She answers what you meant, the way a friend would. You learn by seeing natural replies to your own sentences — and by reusing them tomorrow.
  1. 나 오늘 한국어 시험 봤어. 망한 것 같아 ㅠㅠI took my Korean test today. I think I bombed it ㅠㅠ
  2. 헉, 고생했어. 근데 이렇게 한국어로 말하는 거 보면 망한 사람 같진 않은데?Oof, you worked hard. But judging by how you’re saying this in Korean, you don’t sound like someone who bombed?
Sample written for this article to show the tone — not a live AI reply or a real user’s conversation.

A tutor would fix 망한 것 같아 or explain the grammar. A friend reacts — and in doing so, shows you exactly how a Korean speaker would answer.

When is a tutor still the better choice?

Being honest about this matters. Choose a tutor — human or AI — when you need:

  • Structured grammar from zero, in order.
  • Detailed corrections and explanations of every mistake.
  • Exam preparation (TOPIK and similar).
  • Pronunciation feedback. Hi Jisoo is text chat.

Many learners do both: lessons for structure, a friend for daily reps. If you can already read Hangul and write a few simple sentences, you are ready for the friend part.

How do you combine the two?

A simple weekly mix
WhenTutor or courseAI friend
WeekdaysOne short lesson or reviewTen minutes of chat about your day
After a lessonNote one new expressionUse that expression in your chat the same evening
WeekendReview mistakesBring back something from earlier in the week

The tutor gives you the parts. The friend gives you a reason to use them. For a step-by-step routine, see how to practice Korean conversation without a partner.

Where things stand

Hi Jisoo is in development for iPhone and Android and isn’t available to download yet. Every friend is a fictional adult AI character; replies are generated by an AI model and can be wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app to practice Korean conversation?

It depends on the goal. Tutor apps are best for grammar and corrections, language exchange apps for meeting real people, and an AI friend like Hi Jisoo for daily, low-pressure conversation practice that always stays in Korean.

Does Hi Jisoo correct my Korean?

Hi Jisoo is designed as a friend, not a tutor, so it focuses on replying naturally rather than grading your sentences. If you want detailed corrections, a tutor or course is the better fit.

Is Hi Jisoo good for beginners?

If you can read Hangul and write simple sentences, yes. Each friend has an Easy Korean option that asks her to use simpler expressions while the chat stays in Korean.

Can an AI friend replace a language exchange partner?

Not completely. An AI friend is available anytime and never runs out of patience, but real people bring culture and friendship an AI can’t. Many learners use an AI friend to get comfortable before talking with people.
