A Three-Sentence Korean Diary You Can Turn Into a Chat

A diary prompt can feel larger than the day it is supposed to describe. You do not need to explain everything. One event, one reaction and one next step are enough to make a small record and give a Korean conversation somewhere to go.

Short answer

Write a short Korean diary in three parts: something that happened, how it felt, and what you want to do next. Use words you already know and keep each sentence small. This creates a concrete conversation topic without needing an exciting day, a long vocabulary list or a perfect paragraph.

What should I write in a beginner Korean diary?

Start with an event you can name: eating lunch, finishing work or taking a walk. Add a feeling that belongs to that event. Finish with a small plan or wish. The third sentence can be about tonight; it does not have to be an ambitious goal for tomorrow.

The three-part diary
KoreanRomanizationMeaning and when to use it
오늘 친구를 만났어요.oneul chingureul mannasseoyo.Event: I met a friend today.
같이 이야기해서 즐거웠어요.gachi iyagihaeseo jeulgeowosseoyo.Feeling: I enjoyed talking together.
내일은 집에서 쉬고 싶어요.naeireun jibeseo swigo sipeoyo.Next step: Tomorrow I want to rest at home.

What if nothing special happened today?

Ordinary days work well. 오늘 집에 있었어요. means “I stayed home today.” 음악을 들었어요. means “I listened to music.” Those are events. You can connect either to 마음이 편했어요. (“I felt at ease”) or 조금 심심했어요. (“I was a little bored”). Choose the sentence that is true for you.

Keep the detail, even if the day sounds unremarkable. “I ate something delicious” offers less to discuss than “I made fried rice.” A small concrete noun is often more useful than an advanced adjective.

Which sentence endings should I use?

For a conversational diary that you plan to share, polite -았어요/-었어요 past-tense forms are a practical option. Private Korean diaries also use plain written forms; you do not need to imitate that style when your goal is a chat. Choose one register for the exercise rather than mixing formal reports and casual texts.

일이 많았어요.iri manasseoyo. There was a lot of work.
점심이 맛있었어요.jeomsimi masisseosseoyo.Lunch was delicious.
조금 피곤했어요.jogeum pigonhaesseoyo.I was a little tired.
기분이 좋았어요.gibuni joasseoyo.I felt good.
오늘은 일찍 자고 싶어요.oneureun iljjik jago sipeoyo.I want to go to bed early today.

How do I turn a diary into a conversation?

Send the three sentences, then follow one detail in the reply. You can also explicitly say you want a conversation rather than a correction: 문법 설명보다 그냥 이야기하고 싶어요. (“I would rather just talk than get a grammar explanation.”) The following exchange was written for this article.

  1. 오늘 일이 많았어요. 조금 피곤했어요. 저녁에는 산책하고 싶어요.There was a lot of work today. I was a little tired. I want to go for a walk this evening.
  2. 오래 걷기보다 잠깐 바람만 쐬어도 좋겠어요.Even a little fresh air could be nice instead of a long walk.
  3. 맞아요. 가까운 공원까지만 다녀오려고요.Right. I am planning to go only as far as a nearby park.

What is a useful way to review the next day?

Read yesterday’s entry once and change one piece: the food, the feeling or the next step. This is a manageable writing exercise, not a requirement to keep a streak. When you need a question instead, try our Korean conversation starters.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Korean diary have to use plain written style?

No. Plain forms are common in private writing, but polite conversational endings work for an exercise you intend to share in a chat.

Should I translate a whole English diary?

For this exercise, start with an event you can describe using Korean you already know. Translating a long paragraph can make the task unnecessarily difficult.

Does Hi Jisoo grade my Korean diary?

Hi Jisoo is an AI friend app rather than an assessment tool. Treat the diary as a conversation topic and verify any language explanation you need to rely on.
