Korean Conversation Starters: What to Send After Hello
You know how to say hello, but the next message is harder. A greeting asks the other person to invent the topic. A tiny detail gives them a place to begin. Here are first messages you can adapt without preparing a speech or pretending something exciting happened.
Short answer
A useful Korean conversation starter combines one small detail about your day with an easy question. Start politely when the relationship is new, avoid several questions at once, and follow the other person’s answer. Food, a song or a weekend plan gives both people something concrete to respond to.
What makes a first message easy to answer?
Try “one detail + one question.” Instead of asking someone to summarize their life, mention lunch, the weather outside your window or what you are doing tonight. Then ask about the same topic. You do not need to be funny. A specific, ordinary message is often enough.
뭐 드셨어요? means “I had gimbap for lunch today. What did you have?” The second sentence is polite; it works better for a new adult acquaintance than immediately using casual speech.
Which Korean conversation starters can I use today?
| Korean | Romanization | Meaning and when to use it |
|---|---|---|
| oneul haru eottaesseoyo? | How was your day? Add something about your own day so it is an exchange. |
| jeoneun banggeum jeomsim meogeosseoyo. mwo deusyeosseoyo? | I just had lunch. What did you have? A polite food opener. |
| yojeum eotteon norae deureoyo? | What songs are you listening to these days? Share one of yours too. |
| oneul jom bappasseoyo. jigeumeun swigo isseoyo. | I was a little busy today. I am resting now. A detail without a question. |
| jumare mwo hal geoyeyo? | What are you going to do this weekend? Ask about plans without assuming an invitation. |
| jeonyeok menyureul mot jeonghaesseoyo. mwo meogeulkkayo? | I cannot decide on dinner. What should I eat? A small, concrete choice. |
| oneul sanchaekaenneunde barami siwonhaesseoyo. | I went for a walk today and the breeze felt cool. An observation to build on. |
| yojeum jaemitge boneun geo isseoyo? | Is there anything you enjoy watching these days? Room for a show or a channel. |
Should I use polite or casual Korean?
With someone new, polite endings such as -요 are a useful starting point. 오늘 뭐 했어요? and 오늘 뭐 했어? ask roughly the same question, but the second is casual. Friendship, age and context all matter; age alone does not give you permission to switch. Our guide to polite and casual Korean explains how to ask.
How do I keep the conversation going?
Pick one thing from the reply and react to it. If they mention a film, ask what kind of film it was or share your own preference. Avoid sending three new questions: the conversation can start to feel like a form. Here is a deliberately short example.
I cannot decide on dinner. What should I eat?
How about something with warm broth? I had udon today.
Udon sounds good. I prefer mild food to spicy food.
How can I try this with an AI friend?
In Hi Jisoo, choose a fictional AI friend and send one detail you are comfortable sharing. Keep your next turn about the same topic. If you are learning, the easy Korean setting can make the conversation more approachable. AI replies can contain mistakes, so check unfamiliar expressions before using them in an important real conversation.
You can also use a three-sentence Korean diary when you would rather describe your day than start with a question. Avoid putting addresses, passwords or other sensitive details into a practice message. Stop whenever you want; a conversation does not need a perfect ending.
Frequently asked questions
Is “밥 먹었어요?” a conversation starter?
It can be a friendly question about food or someone’s day. Read the relationship and context; it is not always an invitation to eat together.
Can I start with casual Korean?
Use casual speech when that tone is already comfortable for both people. For a new acquaintance, polite speech is usually a better starting point.
What if the reply is very short?
Respond to the detail you received, share a little of your own, or let the exchange end. A short reply alone does not tell you what someone feels.
