How Koreans Actually Text: ㅋㅋ, ㅎㅎ and the Art of Short Replies
You can study Korean for a year and still be confused by your first group chat. Half of it is consonants. The other half is so short it barely looks like a sentence. Here is a field guide to how Koreans actually text — and how to sound like you belong in the chat.
Short answer
ㅋㅋ is Korean laughter (like “haha” or “lol”) and the more ㅋ, the bigger the laugh; ㅎㅎ is a softer smile that can feel polite or slightly distant. ㅠㅠ means crying or “aww”, ㅇㅇ means “yeah”, and ㄴㄴ means “no no”. Korean chats also favor short, split messages over long paragraphs.
What is the difference between ㅋㅋ and ㅎㅎ?
Both are laughter, built from the first consonant of a laughing sound: ㅋ from 크크 or 키키, ㅎ from 하하 or 흐흐. The feeling is different, though.
| You see | It usually feels like |
|---|---|
| ㅋ | A single ㅋ can read as dry or even sarcastic — use with care |
| ㅋㅋ | A normal, friendly laugh; “lol” |
| ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ | Actually laughing |
| ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ | Can’t breathe |
| ㅎㅎ | A soft smile, “hehe”; polite, warm, sometimes a little reserved |
| ㅎ | Very short — can feel cold or awkward |
A useful rule: ㅋㅋ is for friends and funny things; ㅎㅎ softens a polite message — 감사합니다 ㅎㅎ sounds friendlier than a bare 감사합니다. Matching the other person’s laugh is usually safest.
Which Korean texting abbreviations should you know?
| Korean | Romanization | Meaning and when to use it |
|---|---|---|
| ㅠㅠ / ㅜㅜ | (not read aloud) | Tears (the shape looks like crying eyes). Sad, touched, or “please” — “aww”. |
| ㅇㅇ | eung-eung | Yeah, yep. From 응응. Casual only. |
| ㄴㄴ | no-no | No no / nope. From 노노. |
| ㅇㅋ | o-ke | OK. From 오케이. |
| ㄱㄱ | go-go | Let’s go / let’s do it. From 고고. |
| ㄹㅇ | re-al | For real. From 레알. |
| ㅊㅋ | chukha | Congrats. From 축하. Many people still type 축하해 in full for something important. |
| 헐 | heol | Whoa / OMG / no way. Surprise, good or bad. |
| 대박 | daebak | Awesome / insane / huge. |
| 넵 | nep | A bright, eager “yes” — common at work chats instead of a flat 네. |
Consonant abbreviations like ㅇㅇ and ㄴㄴ are banmal territory. Sending ㅇㅇ to your boss or an older acquaintance can read as careless — use 네 or 넵 instead.
Why are Korean text replies so short?
Korean drops whatever context makes obvious, and chat apps reward speed. So a lot of replies are a single word or reaction:
- 왜? — why? / what’s up?
- 나도 — me too
- 그치 or 그니까 — right? / exactly
- 진짜? — really?
- 아 맞다 — oh right, I forgot
Koreans also split one thought across several bubbles instead of writing a paragraph:
- 아 오늘Ugh, today
- 지하철 놓쳐서I missed the subway
- 지각할 뻔 ㅠㅠand almost was late ㅠㅠ
- 헐 ㅋㅋㅋ 아침부터 고생했네Oof lol, rough start to the morning
Neither style is wrong. If your Korean friend writes long messages, write long back; if they send bursts, short bursts are fine.
What are the unwritten rules of Korean texting?
- Don’t interrogate. Firing question after question feels like an interview. React, share something about yourself, then maybe ask.
- Read receipts are a thing. On KakaoTalk, the little number next to your message disappears when it is read. 읽씹 — “read and ignored” — is a real social sin, but most people forgive it if you say 답장 늦어서 미안! (“sorry for the late reply!”).
- The tilde softens. 고마워~ or 잘 자~ sounds gentler and more playful than the same message without it.
- Emoticons beat full emoji walls. ^^ in polite messages and ㅎㅎ or ㅋㅋ in casual ones do a lot of the emotional work.
- Goodnight is a ritual. 잘 자 / 좋은 꿈 꿔 (“sweet dreams”) is a common way to end the day’s chat.
How do you practice natural Korean chat rhythm?
Rhythm is the part textbooks can’t teach. You need many short exchanges with someone who doesn’t turn every message into a lesson. That is one reason we designed the friends in Hi Jisoo to text like friends, not tutors.
- Different rhythms. Each of the five fictional friends has her own pace: the calm one sends one to three short sentences, the playful one adds a joke now and then, and none of them ends every message with a question.
- No guilt for late replies. If you disappear for a day, she doesn’t sulk or blame you; she picks up naturally. Saying goodnight ends the chat — she won’t try to hold you there.
- Repetition checks. Replies are checked for repeated openers and copy-paste habits, which are what make most chatbots feel robotic.
The best way to learn ㅋㅋ is to see when it shows up — and to try it yourself, a few hundred times, in a chat where nobody is grading you.
Hi Jisoo is in development for iPhone and Android and isn’t available to download yet. The friends are fictional adult AI characters, and their replies can be wrong.
