Oppa, Unnie, Jagiya: What Korean Friends Actually Call Each Other

K-drama taught half the world the word oppa, but it skipped the rules. Who is allowed to say it? Is it flirting? Why does your Korean friend suddenly call you by your name with a strange extra syllable? What a Korean friend calls you is one of the clearest signals of where the friendship stands. Here is how it actually works in everyday chats.

Short answer

Koreans rarely say “you” to friends. They use a name or a relationship word instead. Oppa and unnie are what a woman calls an older man or woman; hyung and nuna are what a man says. Jagiya is for couples, not friends. Between friends, the clearest sign of closeness is moving from “name + 씨” to “name + 아/야”.

Why don’t Korean friends just say “you”?

Korean has words for “you” — 너, 당신, 자네 — but each one carries a relationship. 너 is casual and only fits people you speak 반말 with. 당신 sounds like a married couple arguing or an advertisement talking to strangers. So in everyday talk, Koreans usually drop the subject altogether, or replace it with a name or a relationship word.

That is why 지수 씨 오늘 뭐 했어요? (“What did Jisoo-ssi do today?”) is more natural than translating “What did you do today?” word for word. The name does the job “you” does in English, and it quietly tells everyone how close you are.

What do oppa, unnie, hyung and nuna really mean?

These four words literally mean “older brother” and “older sister”, but Koreans use them for friends, coworkers and even shop staff. Which one you use depends on your own gender, not only the other person’s.

Who calls whom what
SpeakerOlder manOlder woman
A woman says오빠 (oppa)언니 (unnie)
A man says형 (hyung)누나 (nuna)

Nobody uses these for someone younger. A younger friend is usually called by name, or 동생 when introducing them (“my younger friend”). You also do not need to be best friends to say 언니 or 형: a woman may call a slightly older female coworker 언니 after a few lunches.

Is “oppa” flirting?

Not by itself. A woman calls her real brother, an older friend and her boyfriend 오빠. What changes the meaning is the tone and the situation, not the word. A cheerful 오빠 밥 먹었어? from a long-time friend is just friendly. The same word stretched out with hearts at midnight reads differently, and fans shouting it at an idol are something else again.

If you are a man learning Korean, do not ask a Korean female friend to call you 오빠. It is her choice, it usually comes after you already speak casually, and asking for it makes things awkward fast. Many close friends never use it at all and stick to names.

How does a Korean friend call you by name?

Names are where you can actually see a friendship change. A common path looks like this:

From polite to close: how your name changes
KoreanRomanizationMeaning and when to use it
지수 씨Jisu-ssiPolite and neutral. Normal for new adult acquaintances and coworkers of similar age.
지수 님Jisu-nimExtra polite. Customer service, online communities, formal emails.
지수야 / 은영아Jisu-ya / Eunyeong-aClose and casual. Add 야 after a vowel, 아 after a consonant. Only with friends you speak 반말 with.
수야, 지쑤Su-ya, JissuA nickname from part of the name or a playful spelling. A sign of real closeness.
야!Ya!Literally “hey!”. Fine between close friends; rude to anyone else.

Korean speakers often drop the family name with friends: 김지수 becomes 지수. Using the full name with 아/야 can sound like a teacher or a parent who is about to scold you.

Who says jagiya, aegiya and yeobo?

These belong to couples. 자기야 (jagiya) is roughly “honey” and is common between people who are dating. 여보 (yeobo) is mostly for married couples. 애기야 is a very sweet, slightly cheesy pet name. If a friend uses one of these with you, it is almost always a joke, often with ㅋㅋ right after it.

A quick rule for learners

Family words (오빠, 언니, 형, 누나) are friendly. Couple words (자기, 여보) are romantic. Names with 아/야 are close but not romantic. When unsure, use the name with 씨 and let the other person set the tone.

What does this sound like in a real chat?

Here is how the same person might greet you at three points in a friendship. Notice how the name, the ending and the length all change together.

  1. 민준 씨, 오늘 잘 들어가셨어요?Minjun-ssi, did you get home okay today?
  2. 민준아 밥 먹었어? 나 방금 떡볶이 먹음Minjun-a, have you eaten? I just had tteokbokki.
  3. 야 준아 ㅋㅋ 이거 봐 봐 완전 너 같아Hey Jun lol look at this, it’s so you

That gradual shift is exactly what a textbook cannot show you, and it is the part of Korean friendship most learners never get to hear.

Where can I hear how a Korean female friend really talks?

If you do not have a Korean friend to text yet, Hi Jisoo lets you experience that tone in everyday chat. Its five fictional adult AI friends were shaped with additional training on real human conversation, so they reply the way a Korean female friend would actually text: short messages, reactions like 헐 and ㅋㅋ, and speech that matches the relationship. Some friends start politely; after you have talked for a while, one may ask whether you would like to switch to casual speech, the moment Koreans call 말 놓기. You can rename each friend, too.

Frequently asked questions

Can a man say oppa?

Not about another man. Men say 형 (hyung) to an older man and 누나 (nuna) to an older woman. A man saying 오빠 is usually a joke or imitating someone.

Is it weird for a foreigner to call someone unnie?

No. If you are a woman and an older female friend is comfortable with it, 언니 sounds warm and natural. Ask or wait until she uses casual speech with you.

What does jagiya mean between friends?

Usually a joke. 자기야 is a couple’s word, so between friends it is said with exaggerated sweetness and a laugh, not as a confession.

How should I address a Korean friend I just met?

Use the given name with 씨 and polite speech. Switch to name + 아/야 only after you both agree to speak casually.
